If you live in Raleigh, NC or any of the surrounding areas you've definitely seen Pink Muhly Grass in the last few years. This Native and low maintenance ornamental grass, with it's late-season bursts of color, both pink and white varieties, commands attention from anyone driving by. The ethereal plumes of flower panicles form an enchanting pink or white aura above the deep green, glossy foliage.
Native to the central and eastern parts of the United States, extending south to Mexico and Guatemala, Muhly grass flourishes in clay or thin rocky soils. Its natural habitat includes areas previously burned, resembling prairies, as well as open woodlands, savannas, dry woodlands, and mountainous regions around rock outcrops. However, if you visit Waverly Place in Cary, NC you'll see it does equally well in a stream of flowing water! Got to love hydroponics.
While captivating on its own, Muhly grass makes a bold statement when mass-planted. In the fall, delicate pink or white flowers adorn long, narrow, wiry leaves, eventually giving rise to petite seeds. Attaining heights of up to 4 feet and widths of 3 feet, this perennial thrives in sunlit locations and well-drained soil. It is an absolute favorite of mine to use.
